‘100 Hole Hike’ – Two Newcastle West Golfers each play 100 HOLES of golf in ONE DAY for ‘Youth On Course’
The challenge was taken up by two Newcastle West golfers Gearóid Whelan and Barry O’Leary. To play 100 holes of non-stop golf in one day is a mega-marathon of golf and required a huge commitment and extreme levels of fitness. An intensive strength and conditioning programme was undertaken by Gearoid and Barry for several weeks in preparation for the challenging event. Monagea man Cathal O’Sullivan and his US based business partner David Graham raised funds for ‘Youth on Course’ in the USA while Gearóid and Barry raised funds to help the development of ‘Youth Golf’ in West Limerick through Newcastle West Golf Club. .
The four golfers started at first light on Wednesday 2nd October and finished at dusk, each having played 100 holes of golf. Huge thanks goes to the many Junior and Senior caddies who helped on the day, to the supporters who encouraged the golfers throughout the day, the water carriers, soup & coffee makers, sandwich makers, chocolatiers, masseurs etc – míle buíochas.
The Newcastle West event was the only one run in Ireland and occurred at the same time at golf courses throughout the USA.
Gearoid and Barry presented a cheque for €2,800 to John Devine General Manager Newcastle West Golf Club.
